GALACTIC COMMAND – ECHO SQUAD SE SNEAK PREVIEW

The IGN sneak preview is now online offering space combat gamers the chance to see the game in action and provide feedback which will hopefully shape the future of the series. This preview is exclusive to File Planet subscribers and will run for a week.

For a limited time, gamers also have the chance to pre-order the game from both Direct2Drive and Gamers Gate at a 10% discount.

The public demo will be released around the same time as the game’s digital distribution release date on March 3rd.

Apart from the fact that the game looks and sounds stunning, it also plays very well on all systems which meet its minimum and recommended system requirements. Running the game at 1080p (1920×1080) on a large high-def display is truly a sight to behold!!

We also spent quite a bit of time implementing and tweaking support for analog gamepads as well as the XBOX 360 Controller for Windows which we have full rumble support for during collisions, weapons fire, jump sequence etc.

The in game documentation also make it easy to pick up the game and play without having to look around for printed documentation.

This game marks our official entry into the combat action genre and we have two other titles currently in development, each with a slew of ground breaking technologies and features. More info soon!

UNIVERSAL COMBAT RELEASED AS FREEWARE

As announced late last year, Dreamcatcher’s five year rights to two of our legacy games, Battlecruiser Millennium Gold (2003) and Universal Combat (2003) expired on 12/18/07. As such, we had advised the publisher to initiate a DIF (Destroy In Field) order to its various retailers so that the games can no longer be sold. The new Dreamcatcher management (under the new Jowood owners) have complied accordingly as best we can tell.

In case you were wondering; yes, the games were still selling and generating royalty income as per the [unpaid] quarterly royalty statements from the publisher. Those [two year] accumulated and unpaid income earnings will be written off as a bad debt loss in our 2007 tax filings once we receive the Q4/07 statements which are due around the end of January ’08.

That said, in keeping with the tradition of releasing my legacy games for free, I have repackaged the single player Universal Combat game and released it into the wild as freeware. Once again, our freeware game is released with no advertising, no nag screens, no expiration date, nothing. Just the full (and patched) single player game as was commercially released in Feb 2004, but with fewer music tracks (the game FAQ shows how players can add their own MP3 tracks) and no multiplayer.

The only condition under which our freeware games are released is that they not be sold under any circumstances, nor bundled as part of any commercial media (e.g. magazine cover discs) without my expressed written permission.

We previously released the original Battlecruiser Millennium game; as such there are no plans to release the Gold version.

GALACTIC COMMAND – ECHO SQUAD SE

Following the end of the GameTap exclusive to the original title completed earlier this year, we have decided to release a Second Edition branded version of the game for wide public release in January 2008.

An update product info, version control file (showing the transition from the legacy v1 to the v2 SE version) and several screen shots have also been uploaded. For more info, please visit the products page.

This decision allows us to bring our first non-niche space combat title to the gaming masses; sporting several of our new technologies, gameplay improvements and revisions over our earlier niche titles.

It also allows us to direct all our attention to the follow up title, Galactic Command – Talon Elite, our first console title of which the XB360 version is scheduled to be the first release during holiday 2008. The PC version is scheduled to follow thereafter.

GALACTIC COMMAND – TALON ELITE ANNOUNCED

We’ve taken quite a bit of flak for signing our first non-niche title, Echo Squad, to an exclusive subscription service.

But what most people didn’t know, is that like our previous Battlecruiser and Universal Combat series’, GALCOM was planned as a series. Unlike our previous games which lumped all gameplay aspects into one really – really – huge and complex (according to some) game, the design of GALCOM was from the ground up to be split. In that we took all elements (space combat, planetary flight/vehicular/first person combat
etc) of our technologies and split them into bite sized chunk.

So, what you have are several games in the series and all targeted at a specific genre and audience.

While Echo Squad (exclusive to GameTap’s service and which will debut this July) focuses on a team of gung-go space combat pilots based within Terran territories and mostly a defense force assigned to a specific fleet, Talon Elite focuses on yet another group of gung-ho combat
pilots; albeit the best of the best.

The Talon Elite guys fly different fighters, engage in different and more dangerous missions and all deep – deep – behind enemy lines.
Relying only on their fleet for support, there are no friendly stations anywhere near where these guys operate.

The Talon Elite missions are on the high end of the dangerous scale.

UNIVERSAL COMBAT – COLLECTORS’ EDITION DISTRIBUTION

As previously announced earlier this year, we decided to retire the
Battlecruiser/Universal Combat in style and with a retail send off of
this long running and sometimes controversial (not unlike its creator)
series of games.

Well, after negotiations with several parties, our quest led us right
back to where the series began its retail life as Battlecruiser 3000AD
aka BC3K, back in 1996. Only this time, we are self-publishing it, while
the excellent ‘new guard’ at Take 2 games, notable for doing a really

good distribution job for various retail worthy indie titles including
the distribution of Stardock’s excellent Galactic Civilizations II, are
our exclusive North American retail distributors.

Unlike most game compilations which just take a bunch of games and stick
them in a box, UCCE has a plethora of engine and game enhancements,
including Vista support, which will allow it to stand the test of time
for the forseeable future as the industy races away from the niche
titles of yesteryear.

Quite a bit of work went into UCCE and we are proud of the end result as
we wave a fond farewell to our roots while plotting a new path for our –
still – 100% independent and self-funded studio.

We will miss the ol’ gal, but if nothing else, the controversy of its
shaky beginnings, trials and tribulations, will live on. As Derek Smart
put it,

“…I wouldn’t have it any other way. For good, bad or ugly, its

part of history, my history in particular. I set out to do something
unique and amidst the failures, controversies, frustrations and not to
mention the publishing shenanigans by rather unscrupulous publishers, I
stuck with my dream and remained completely undeterred. Not many of us
in the industry can say that.”

GALACTIC COMMAND – ECHO SQUAD GOES GOLD!

Yep, the first game in our new mass market targeted space/aerial combat action game has gone Gold!! It will be released exclusively via Turner’s GameTap service this Summer. If you missed that bit of news, you can grab the press release over on the product’s page.

It has been a long year but I think the effort has been well worth it; especially when you consider just how many standards (from our niche offerings) had to be breached. Heck, picture this: the entire game can be played using an analog gamepad (!) for e.g. Logitech’s excellent Dual-Action or the XB360 Controller for Windows. Now if that’s not shocking enough, picture this: An in game, fully viewable, game manual, tutorial and keyboard commands. In under a, uhm, million pages.

Yeah, what the hell, we sold out. The money wasn’t bad either; but most importantly, once again we got to develop a game that we wanted to play, not some other ‘me too’ industry fodder.

Speaking of fodder, that’s right, in keeping with our tradition of releasing games in a series until gamers lose track of what’s what, there are no less than three episodic titles in the Galactic Command series, currently in development. The second title to be released, Galactic Command – Bravo Team, visions the battle from the viewpoint of a bunch of inept (seriously, its got, like, comedy and everything) planetside marines. With an all new terrain engine (which also uses SpeedTree RT middleware for vegetation) and a plethora of advancements and features, using our advanced AI technologies already seen in our previous games, Bravo Team takes first person squad command to a whole new level. UNIVERSAL COMBAT CE GOES GOLD

The final game in the long running Battlecruiser/Universal Combat series has gone gold and will appear in retail outlets around the end of this month or in early April.

This title will only be available in retail stores in North America and will not be available for digital download purchase until sometime around the end of the year. This decision was based on the fact that we wanted to release this final title in boxed format, the same format that the first game in the series was released in back in 1996.

There are no plans to release it outside North America at this time.

We are pleased to announce that after several months of talks, evaluations etc, we have reached an agreement with Turner Game Network to publish GALCOM – ES exclusively through their GameTap subscription service for a period of five years.

PRODUCT ANNOUNCEMENT

On December 4th, 2006, we announced a new aerial/space combat action series which was spawned from our existing and emerging game technologies. At the time, we envisioned the series as being focused on a single aspect of gameplay for both the PC and XBox 360.

During negotiations with various parties, we ended up splitting the series in order to cater to our different audiences across platforms. The end result is that the series has now been split into specific episodic genres. Imagine, if you will, the different aspects of the popular sci-fi series, Star Trek.

Galactic Command – Echo Squad, is the new name of the original aerial/space action combat title based on the adventures of a group of Elite Force Pilots assigned to the Excalibur carrier. This title will remain a PC exclusive.

We have this week signed an exclusive four episode deal for this title. More info will be announced by the publisher at the upcoming D.I.C.E. summit in Las Vegas.

GALCOM:ES is on schedule for release in Q2/07.

Galactic Command – Bravo Team is an fps only title based on the adventures of a team of elite marines assigned to a planetary starbase. It is also episodic and features some of our emerging technologies, including a heavily revamped terrain engine which uses SpeedTreeRT. GALCOM:BT is on schedule for release in Q4/07.

Galactic Command – Excalibur. Similar to “Echo Squad”, this title is also episodic and focuses on the Excalibur command carrier and the combat pilots assigned to it. This title will remain an XBox 360 exclusive.

The 500MB version is the full self-contained demo.

The 90MB version is for those who already own a copy of the previous Universal Combat A World Apart game. To use this version, simply clone your UCAWA game folder. Then copy this file into that folder and execute it. Upon completion, you can then create a shortcut to the UCSE.EXE file to execute the demo. The commandline parameters are the same as those for UCAWA.

TRYMEDIA VERSIONS TO BE DISCONTINUED

We have no less than three different [protected] versions of the game in circulation and maintaining them is taking up more resources than first anticipated.

To this end, effective Feb. 1st, we will no longer be selling the Trymedia protected versions of UCG and UCAWA. This leaves us with only two protection schemes to support and concentrates our digital sales through Digital River and IGN’s Direct2Drive.

If you currently own a copy of the TryMedia version, you will be contacted via email and given instructions on how to convert your version to the Digital River (Starforce ProActive protected) version.

Well, the new year is upon us and the industry is settling down to the disappointment that was Q4/05 retail video game sales. If nothing else, perhaps this will serve as yet another reminder that this whole Christmas bum rush of products is: Just. Plain. Bad.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, we’ve been working on our future projects and are today pleased to also announce a brand new IP and a new title.

Hostile Intent – Planetfall brings our seamlessly integrated technologies to the formidable XBox360 platform. You can read more preliminary info on our discussions forum.

KnightBlade – Line Of Defense, another XBox360 title, is our brand new from-the-ground-up IP which is not only ground breaking but also continues our trend of developing truly innovative titles. You can read more preliminary info on our discussions forum.

Yep, you guessed it. We’re in the process of a major console sellout. Who knew?!?

We are also in the process of negotiating several deals for the boxed versions of both Universal Combat Gold and Universal Combat – A World Apart, both of which were released late last year for online purchase only. More news when the dust settles.

Plans are also in the works to release Battlecruiser 3000AD – The Last Decade sometime next year. This will be the final BC/UC franchise stream and is a culmination of every scenario from all six games in the series, starting with the very first title, Battlecruiser 3000AD (1996) to Universal Combat – A World Apart (2005). In other words, a huge game. Based on the UCAWA engine, it will also feature several graphics and gameplay tweaks and will mark the final curtain for our legacy franchise as we’ve come to know it.

UCAWA is ready to ship. Some of the e-commerce partners are not yet online but will be later this week.

However, our primary distributor BMT Micro now have their orders page up. The links are on our main sales page.

Orders placed for UCAWA today, will start shipping tomorrow or Friday. So if you want it for the weekend, put a rush on the shipping.

Note that we are only taking pre-orders for Universal Combat Gold. It is not scheduled to ship until first week of September.

Our official multiplayer servers for UCAWA won’t be up until next week due to them being upgraded as they will no longer be running UC games as of Monday August 8th.

UCAWA is the full sequel to the best selling Universal Combat title, released in 2004 by Dreamcatcher Games. A new demo based on final game code was recently released. Download links are available at our website.

UCAWA will retail for $29.99 across all mediums.

Universal Combat Gold, the updated version of our best selling Universal Combat, is going on sale week of September 1st via the same online sites. UCG features all the content and revisions from the original Universal Combat title plus all new scenarios, revised graphics engine, new 3D content and much, much more. A web page dedicated to shots of the game (for comparison with the previous version) is now online.

NEW PRODUCT STATUS UPDATE

We are in the process of stripping some Dreamcatcher created content (e.g. main menu graphic, animation logo, EULA etc) from the recently Gold UCAWA build. Once that is complete, the installer updated, everything tested etc, we will be releasing the product via our e-commerce partners.

The products page now has the final pricing info for the next two upcoming products (UCG and UCAWA). UCG is $19.99; and UCAWA is $29.99.

There will no longer be a UC to UCAWA upgrade product available (previously priced at $19.99). As such, UCAWA will be approximately 650MB download size. For those on a dial-up connection, most e-commerce sites have the ability to burn your purchase to CD-ROM. Some charge a fee; some others do not. We will be publishing a list of all e-commerce partners carrying the product, when the links go live.

There are currently NO plans to release a boxed retail version of UCG or UCAWA.

UCAWA is expected to be available in June.

UCG is also expected to be available in June; with July being the worse case scenario.

AGREEMENTS WITH DREAMCATCHER TERMINATED

In other news, while Universal Combat – A World Apart, the eagerly awaited sequel to the original 2004 game, went Gold on 04-15-05 for release this May, several issues with the publisher (Dreamcatcher) have not only held up the boxed retail release of that title, but also led to the termination of the agreement. As a result, Dreamcatcher no longer has those rights as they have now reverted back to 3000AD Inc. We are in the process of negotiating with other interested parties for the boxed retail rights to this product.

We also recently terminated the Battlecruiser Millennium Gold and Universal Combat agreement which we also had with this publisher. Those rights have also now reverted back to 3000AD Inc and a cease & desist has been issued to Dreamcatcher, advising them to stop any further production and marketing of these two games or face legal action under the DMCA and other copyright infringement laws.

This issue with Dreamcatcher does not affect the e-commerce download version of UCAWA, which we expect to have available within the coming weeks once all the server side preparations have been completed and tested with our e-commerce partners (e.g. Trymedia, BMT Micro and others) who will be carrying the product.
